Japan To Resume Whaling...

Perhaps some of you had heard that the Japanese were going to put a halt on their whaling program….which, was largely in part due to the effort of Sea Shepherd (a boat whose work is documented through Whale Wars).

However, it is being reported by a Tokyo newspaper (The Yomiuri) that the government is planning to announce the resumption of whaling in the near future.

Although the Sea Shepherd’s fighting towards the Japanese fleet had a large impact and forced them to end the season with just 1/5 of their usual quota, this year the Japanese Government is said to be boosting the budget.

In order to not ‘give in’ to the Sea Shepherd, Japan is rumored to be taking drastic measures to ensure whaling will survive. It is reported that it costs about $40 million a year to send whaling fleets out and according to Mark Willacy, “what we're hearing out of the Yomiuri newspaper today is that they're going to beef up safety measures for the whaling crews, and to do that they're going to inject 2 billion yen, or about $AU27 million into the whaling program.”
