smallest whale population ever identified.
According to Discovery News, recent surveys suggest that there are only about 30 eastern North Pacific Right Whales left alive in the world, and therefore deeming it the smallest population of whales to date.
Two populations of Right Whales are currently in our oceans and include:
The North Pacific/Bering Sea population = 30 whales left
The Southern /Antarctic population = 7,000 whales left
Whaling in the 1960’s and recent illegal catching of right whales are the main causes of this dramatic population downfall. It is uncertain if this population of 8 females and 20-22 males will be able to make a comeback.
SAVE THE WHALES!
