Humpbacks Make An Early Appearance In SoCal.

If I was only there to take advantage :(

According to Outdoors, action and adventure blog, the Humpback whales have arrived about a month early this year (usually expected in May). The Southern California residents and visitors should consider themselves quite lucky - while wrapping up the gray whale migration North, people are potentially able to see both the gray and humpback whales in action.

Humpback whales are among the most showy whales and make for remarkable sightings more often than not. In fact, I have had my best whale watches while in the company of these guys. In fact, yours truly took the pictures within this very post last year - There were so many whales, I could not even eat a snack (an occurrence that rarely happens for me).

And if these two types of whales are just not quite enough, don't you worry - perhaps you are familiar with the blue whale...? Oh, just the largest animal to have ever lived is coming soon to the SoCal area very soon (early June). I think a whale watching trip is in store for you and your 100 closest friends.

ACS/LA Ultimate Whale Watch

ACS/LA is having their annual Ultimate Whale Watch this Saturday, boarding at LA Harbor Sportfisihing in San Pedro, CA. Those aboard this trip will spend nine hours in search of whales, dolphins and other marine life. Other species we could encounter during the trip include, Fin whales, humpback whales, minke whales, and multiple species of dolphins including bottlenose, common, Pacific white-sided and Risso’s.

Last year was such an amazing trip and I am very bummed I won't be able to attend this year - but I am already awaiting the stories of sightings via facebook.

There are still spaces available, we would love to have you join us on what promises to be an exciting adventure. The price is $69 per person and $59 for ACS members.

ALSO - Please save the date: The annual ACS/LA Blue Whale trip aboard the “Condor Express” out of Santa Barbara will be on Saturday, July 30.

Move Over...Whales Coming Through!!

Well, believe it or not - the California Gray Whale Census witnessed SIXTY FOUR whales on March 21st 2011, proving to be the largest census sighting since March, 1998!!!

While swimming by, the whale behaviors seen included mating, breaching, pectoral fin slapping...basically anyone who is anyone would have been impressed (and if you don't know what these nerdy whale terms mean, please visit the one and only ACS fact sheet containing countless factoids that are guaranteed to impress all ages).
